Web sites are no longer luxuries that only large corporations can afford.
A web site is as essential to any business now as a telephone listing or business cards.
Over the last few years, the Internet has grown at a phenomenal rate, and this growth rate is not going to slow down. The public now expects even small businesses to have an Internet presence, and the cost of having that presence to the business owners is relatively insignificant. The cost of paying to have a web site for the whole world to see for an entire year, is probably well below the cost of one small advertisement in the local newspaper.
And, web sites are not just for businesses. There are very many web sites that have been published for personal hobbies and interests, online photograph albums, clubs, associations and for a whole host of other reasons.
So, whether you are in business or not, if you don’t currently have a web site, why don’t you?
Let’s take a look at having a web site from a business viewpoint for a start.
Regardless of the type of business with which you are involved, I am sure that as a business owner or executive, you would weigh up the pros and cons of any decisions you make regarding your business.
Well, what are the pros and the cons of having a business web site?
You can do this yourself, or brainstorm with a group of your colleagues. Get two sheets of paper. On the top of one write ‘Pros’, and on the top of the other write ‘Cons’. OK, now start writing your lists.
I would be happy even for you to share your ideas with me, just email your lists to me by clicking on my name, Ian McKenzie
I am going to list a few of the pros and cons that I can think of right here. Firstly the Pros.
Pros - Reasons for a business having a web site
It is an easy and inexpensive way of getting company information out to clients and customers.
It is a great way of reaching new potential clients and customers.
A way of letting all of your customers and clients immediately know of any special promotions, change of operating hours, programs or whatever.
Increase your market share by being able to sell your goods and services online.
Most businesses have web sites, and it has become an expectation of customers and clients that businesses have a web presence.
More searches are done on the internet than in telephone directories, or other directories.
Colour catalogues can be produced on web pages for the whole world to see, these would be very expensive to print, publish and distribute ‘hard’ copies.
Contact information for various departments, or staff can easily be posted on a web site. The public is increasingly using the Internet to obtain this sort of information.
And, this list could go on and on.......!
Cons - Reasons for a business not having a web site
The first of these ‘cost’, is not a ‘con’ at all. It costs very little to register a domain name and to host a web site. For a site such as the one you are on right now, this cost is well below $100 for an entire year,
Time need not be an issue also. Anyone can easily build and publish a web site with out any knowledge of HTML (Hyper Text Mark up Language). The web site such as the one you are on right now uses a software program with WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get). If you can type using ‘Word’, you can use this sort of program very easily.
But, maybe you don’t have the time nor perhaps the inclination to build a web site yourself. That also is not a problem. A specialized firm building web sites can design, build and publish a basic web site for you, for a far less cost than you probably thought possible.
Ian McKenzie’s Domains provides each of the following alternatives for you:
A combined software and web site hosting program called WebSite Tonight allowing you to build your site online without the need to purchase expensive software programs.
If you wish to build your own web site on your own computer and transfer it to your host at Ian McKenzie’s Domains, we offer advise and links on the best software programs to use for this purpose. Just go to ‘Website design’ page on this web site.
We also offer a service where we will design, publish and optimize your web site for you. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is all about making it easy for the search engine spiders belonging to Google, Yahoo and the hundreds of other Search Engines to find and list your web site. SEO is an essential part of the design criteria for a web site if search engines are to list your site when browsers type in various key words in the search box and hit ‘search’. As well as discussing with you and optimizing your web site with appropriate content and ‘Meta language’, we will submit your site to over two hundred search engines to get it indexed and more easily found.
