Why ‘Domains’?

I have always had an interest in communication generally. It was in fact the area of my first major in my undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degree, and also an area in which I have lectured tertiary students. The English language, especially the use (and also abuse) of words, their history, evolution and change of meaning is indeed a fascinating area.

I established the business ‘Ian McKenzie’s Domains’ during 2006. I chose the ‘Domains’ part of the name having in mind the unique address that every web site has, of the many millions that are out there in the ether.

Probably most people who are computer and internet savvy who hear the term ‘domain’ will immediately think of unique addresses out there on the World Wide Web. The domain name for this web site for example is www.ianmckenziesdomains.net and the domain name of my home page web site is www.ianmckenzie.name .

But the term ‘domain’ was in use way before personal computers and the internet existed. The term also has meanings related to:

• the ownership and control of land,
• a territory under rule or influence
• a field of action or thought
• the scope or range of any sphere of personal knowledge
• regions with specific characteristics

It also has other specific meanings in the fields of both Physics and Maths.

So, I thought on this site, I would look at ‘Ian McKenzie’s Domains’, not just from the unique web site address point of view, but also to flesh out the alternate meanings of ‘a field of action or thought’ and ‘ the scope or range of any sphere of personal knowledge’.
