Optimization

Google

There is little point in having a web site if no one goes to it. You will need to make it as easy as possible for the Search Engine spiders that are crawling around out there on the World Wide Web to find your site.

The algorithms that the search engines use to list sites are quite complicated and they do keep changing. However, by analyzing the sites that do get high rankings with the major search engines such as Google and Yahoo, it is possible to get information that can be applied to your site(s), so they will get more hits.

There are three basic alternatives you have regarding optimizing your web site(s).

  1. Do it yourself.
  2. Do it yourself with the help of specialized software programs.
  3. Pay a specialist firm to do it for you.

Alternative number one, is certainly the least expensive, money wise. But, it will require considerable time on your part, including continuing study of the algorithms that the search engines are using, so you can keep your web site getting a high number of hits.

Alternative number two. On the ‘Website Design’ page of this web site, I mentioned XSitePro. That program does have a built in Search Engine Optimization function, which makes it even more useful.

There are several software programs available to help in optimizing web sites, so the search engine spiders will find them more easily. This is the second alternative that is available to you. I use two of these programs, both of which are good. However, I would only recommend this alternative to you if you had several web sites, and you were going to take on this optimization project fairly seriously.

Probably the best Search Engine Optimization software comes from Axandra. You can check out their IBP 9, by clicking onthe link below.

The first Search Engine Optimization program I used was Web CEO. They have a version which is totally free, which I used for quite some time before purchasing the professional version. You can download it free of charge here.

If you have one only or just a few web sites, there is another solution available for you. That is Traffic Blazer. If you click on the Traffic Blazer link, it will take you to my companion web site, www.ianmckenziesdomains.biz You will then need to click on the Traffic Blazer link you will find about half way down the right side of the page.

Alternative number three. Web site design and web site optimization go hand in glove. Content is one of the important ingredients necessary to make a site search engine friendly. If you are going to obtain the services of an outside firm to design your web site for you, ensure that they have a good working knowledge of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). It is no good having a great looking web site that the search engine spiders can not find.

As well as for my own company, I do design and optimize web sites for others. If you are interested in working with me to assist in designing and optimizing a web site, then please contact me.

I run regular workshops in Brisbane, Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast on designing, building, publishing and optimizing your own web site. Click on my name Ian McKenzie for details of the next available course.
